2009 Festival Welcome from Festival Chair Brenda Risch

I cordially welcome you to the first annual Frontera Pride Film Festival. This historic event represents the very first major film festival in the El Paso region featuring films by, about and for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The planning board and I are very excited to offer you the fruits of our labor: 26 films and a fabulous gala featuring special guests Octavia Spencer, Tate Taylor and Eva Moss with lively music from talented local performers.

This year’s events represent the first incarnation of a lifelong dream--to build a community film festival. The impetus for the Frontera Pride Film Festival sprang from last June’s film series which was part of the Frontera Pride Festival: A Celebration of the Arts and Humanities. Thus, this is truly a community festival, for it would not have come to fruition without the dedication and countless hours of hard work from our diverse planning board and much support from our community.

This includes the generosity of many of our city officials and access to the beautiful venues like the Plaza’s Philanthropy Theatre and our El Paso Main Library. Countless city employees, volunteers and private citizens have lent a helping hand when most needed, from assistance with contracts to scouting for a great parking place to unload our festival gear. Businesses and individuals stepped forward as financial and in-kind sponsors, offering their cash, products and energy to help make this dream come true. Through a community-based internship program, the Women’s Studies Program at the University of Texas at El Paso provided internship experiences plus a companion “Queer Cinema” course, thus allowing planning board members to pass on their love of the arts as well as practical knowledge to the next generation of community organizers and professionals.

I look forward to the festival’s many incarnations to come…each year showcasing the diverse talents of our LGBTQ community and its allies. Please join us at each screening and our gala to celebrate this joyous moment in El Paso history.
